INTRODUCTION

The antecedent of this department was Crop Science Lectureship and Plant Breeding Lectureship of Taihoku (Taipei) Imperial University founded by Japanese in 1928. Following Taiwan's retrocession to Chinese Sovereignty in 1945, these two Lectureships were reorganized and renamed as the Department of Agronomy. This was one of the oldest departments in the College of Agriculture at that time. The Biometry Lab and the Seed Technology Lab were established in 1946 and 1957, respectively. From that time on, this Department gradually expanded and M.S. and Ph.D. programs were formally started in 1956 and 1967, respectively.

With an aim to promote basic and applied researches in crop science, effort has been focused on recruiting faculty members with strong background in modern agriculture and bioscience as well. Improving research facilities are also our major concern. In the aspects of teaching and research, the faculty always grasps the progress of high technology. In the applied field, they try hard to contact, guide and solve the problems of nowadays agriculture.

The Goal of this department is to offer students broad basic knowledge on which a solid career in Crop Science can be built. The undergraduate program prepares the students for a career in various fields of Crop Science as well as for further study. The graduate program, leading to the degrees of master of science (M.S.) and doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.), aims to prepare the students especially for a career in teaching and/or research.

Each year the Department of Agronomy has research projects in cooperation with National Science Council, Commission of Agriculture and various agencies of the governments.

The future research development will emphasize the fields of molecular breeding, biotechnology, molecular genetics, crop production and management, crop physiology, turfgrass management and weed control, germplasm preservation, statistics and bioinformatics.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

  1. Seminars:The department of Agronomy holds the seminars once a week, each of which lasts two hours. The faculty and graduate students are invited to present their paper covering the issues in Crop Science and the recent experiment reports of their laboratory.
  2. Co-sponsor the annual meetings of Chinese Society of Agronomy and Weed Science Society of the Republic of China.
  3. To edit a quarterly publication, Chinese Agronomy.
  4. To edit a semiannually publication, Weed Science Bulletin.
  5. Irregularly inviting domestic and overseas renowned scholars to give speech and seminar.
  6. Irregularly holding short-term trainings to introduce the latest theory and technique application.
  7. Each year the Department of Agronomy has research projects in cooperation with National Science Council, Commission of Agriculture and various agencies of the Governments.

CAREERS AND FURTHER STUDIES

  1. Professional abilities
    • Production management: cultivation technology, weed control, seed and seeding production.
    • Biological technology: crop response to environmental stress, gene translation, cell raise, crop anatomy, immunity, histochemistry localization, management of biotechnologically modified plant, crop functional genomics.
    • Molecular Breeding: crops heredity characteristic, gene analysis, breeding method.
    • Biological Statistics and Bioinformatics: The statistical method applies to the crops correlation experimental designs and data analysis, explanation and deduction; Application of Bioinformatics.
  2. Further studies
    Each one of those fields: the biology information, the statistics, the molecular biology, the agronomy, the life science, can be studied for further education.
  3. Career options
    Graduates may get jobs in the educational circles, the biological industry, the information business, the research institution, the agricultural laboratory, the overseas unit and the agricultural technique group so on.
